Costume Design
Our Town: Emily Webb
These costumes were designed for all three acts of Our Town. Through all of Emily’s you can see her growth. From the sweet, budding. innocent pink of her Act 1 dress, her blossoming, pure white, glistening wedding dress, to her confined, withered up, black suit which she sheds in Act 3 for her white nightgown; she grows and dies within her outfits. I chose to follow flower language in both my color choices, the silhouettes of her dresses, and in the actual flowers in the outfits. The white roses in her wedding veil stand for her happiness and her love while the white roses on her death hat stand for sympathy and humility. She feels bad for the living and what they don’t understand. The cherry blossom lapel Emily wears in Act 3 stands for being educated and wise.
Romeo and Juliet
These pieces were designed for a production of Romeo and Juliet that takes place during the Elizabethan era. There is an extra scene at the end of the play shows a joint mourning party of the young lovers. bringing the two feuding families together. Both Mr. Montague and Mrs. Capulet are both wearing opulent, all black outfits to show both their wealth and that they are in mourning.
The Man and the Hat
These designs are for a short film about a man who loses his new hat. The Hat Man discovers that The Homeless Man has taken his hat and has to chase The Homeless Man around town to get the hat back. Before The Homeless Man finds The Hat Man’s hat he has a old bucket hat which he throws out. The Homeless Man had to be dressed so that the viewer wouldn’t figure out he was homeless until the end of the film. The Hat Man’s outfit was designed around his blue hat.
Harper's Island: Episode 1
This group of costumes was made based on the script of the first episode of the television show, Harper's Island. Since the characters were so exaggerated and dramatic, I decided to redesign their costumes to show that. Trish Wellington is dressed in a white dress to show that she is soon getting married but, the black fur on the dress shows that she has something she’s hiding. Uncle Marty suit is big and filled with secrets but the mariachi hat he steals from the mariachi band shows that he is a fun guy. Abby Mills has had a troubled life and is using fashion to appear more confident in herself.
